Camino de Santiago

779.5 KM / 487 miles. 33 walking days. 2 rest days. September / October 2025. Weather at this time of year was warm with only a bit of rain toward the end of our trip. As we got further into October the mornings were cool (light jacket requried) and sun came out in the afternoon.  Evenings required pants.

We were excited each day to see which of our new friends we would run into, meet new friends, what the scenery and new towns had to offer, what would our hotel and restaurants be like

Locals were mostly friendly, but some were tired (end of a hectic season), most spoke English but not everyone in the smaller towns.  We felt safe at all times.

We did a pretrip - flying into Barritz, France from Seattle. Then spent a few nights in San Sebastian, Spain prior to transferring by bus/train to SJPDP (Saint-Jean- Pied-de-Port) in south-western France.

Food was fresh and reasonably priced - particularly the wine.  Breakfast was typically rolls, ham, cheese, pastry. For lunch we were able to find sandwiches, occasionally a salad and regularly Spanish tortilla.  Dinner was normally a Pilgrim meal - 3 courses including wine on average for $15.

Budget: We spent $3560 (not including food/drink and international airfare). On average our lodging was $96 a night for a private room.  You can absolutely go cheaper if you stay in the Albergues.  We booked primarily through booking.com.

Lodging:  We booked our lodging in advance as we didn't want to think about it during the trip.  We had a room that was cancelled and were able to easily pivot and find a room for the night.  Half the people booked the entire trip in advance like us.  Many others would book just 2-3 days out.
