Elephant Festival
We were lucky enough to attend the 19th Annual Elephant Festival in Xayabouly Province, on the official opening day February 14. It is a week-long event which celebrates Lao culture, with 50 elephants participating to mark the 50th Anniversary of Lao National Day, featuring parades, shows, and conservation initiatives.
We woke up early on February 14 to leave at 5:30am. There were supposed to be 6 of us but everyone dropped out except Victoria. Which in reflection worked out well as we drove in a pickup truck which was faster 2.5-hour drive rather than 3 and less bumpy if that is even possible. The roads outside of the cities are terrible - littered with potholes.
Our timing was perfect as we arrived right for the start of the parade of the 50+ elephants. We then made our way to the VIP area (no one seemed to care) where we were able to watch upfront the elephants do some tricks.

Loved seeing the elephants blessed in a Baci ceremony. The strings are tied on them for good luck.

After the ceremony we were able to get up close with the elephants.

Another huge highlight for me and Victoria (our friend who went with us) was seeing all the locals out for the day in their village's custom. We particularly enjoyed the hats and their kindness to allow us to take pictures of them.

There were lots of food booths, booths selling clothes, toys, etc. As well as several gambling tables.

We did the trip in one day rather than spend the night as the town doesn't have the infrastructure to support overnight stays. Many people just sent up tents right on the fair grounds.

Highly recommend you google local festivals, events, etc. when you travel to really understand the culture better and have unique experiences.
